Corona Virus : Chinese doctors, equipment arrive Nigeria
The visiting 15-member medical team from China have arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Wednesday 8th of April, despite opposition by the Nigerian Medical Association and Lawmakers.
They were received by the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire.
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) earlier expressed their dissatisfaction with the move.
The association described it as "a thing of embarrassment" to the membership of the association and other health workers who are giving their best in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic under deplorable working conditions.
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) also advised the federal government against the move, saying it was unnecessary to invite Chinese doctors as Nigeria was already handling the crisis effectively.
The personnel, who are experts in infectious diseases, respiratory illness, intensive care, cardiology, neurology, general surgery and anesthesiology, arrived with 16-ton test kits, ventilators, disinfection machine, disposable medical masks, drugs, infrared thermometer and other items ordered by the Federal Government.
Under the directive of the Embassy of China in Nigeria and in response to the Federal Government’s request, the team will also share with their Nigerian counterparts effective methods on COVID-19 containment.
They are to commence their 30 days stay in Nigeria by spending 14 days in quarantine.
